46 Years of Back by Popular Demand

Some businesses are built in a boardroom. Back by Popular Demand was built over 46 years, one consignor, one shopper, and one hard season at a time.

This October marks 46 years since the shop first opened its doors. It’s a milestone very few independent boutiques reach, and the story of how BBPD got here is worth telling.

It Started With Dorothy

In 1980, a woman named Dorothy York started something special. She built a consignment shop on a simple idea: beautiful things deserve more than one life, and the women who own them deserve a place they can trust.

In 2002, Melissa purchased the business and took on the legacy Dorothy created. She wasn’t new to the industry. By then, she had already spent five years working in it, a journey that began when she was still a teenager.

Dorothy has since passed away, but what she started is still very much alive. “That is something I will never take for granted,” Melissa says.

A Business That Kept Reinventing Itself

Forty-six years in retail doesn’t happen by standing still. Over the decades, BBPD has expanded, moved, closed locations, opened new ones, and reinvented itself more times than anyone can count.

The shop has weathered recessions, a pandemic, and the internet completely changing how women shop. Through all of it, the stores in Lilburn and Marietta, and now the online shop, have stayed open.

It hasn’t always been easy. “There were seasons when I genuinely didn’t know if we would make it,” Melissa says. Her answer to how they did is just two words: “But God.” For Melissa, faith isn’t a footnote to the story. It’s the thread running through all of it.

We’ve Grown Up Together

Spend enough years behind a consignment counter and you start to see life happen in real time.

Little girls who once trailed behind their mothers through the racks came back for prom dresses. Then came weddings, babies, and mother-of-the-bride outfits. Now some of those same girls are bringing their own children through the doors.

“We have literally grown up together,” Melissa says. That kind of loyalty can’t be bought, and it’s something no online marketplace can replicate.

Where Your Purchases Really Go

Here’s the part of the story that rarely gets told.

Because customers have kept choosing to shop small, BBPD has given well over six figures in cash donations to people and organizations in need over the years. That money has helped keep the lights on for struggling families, put food on tables, rescued animals, and supported women escaping domestic violence.

“That money didn’t magically appear,” Melissa says. “It happened because you chose to shop with us.”

Every purchase at BBPD is a small act of sustainability, giving a beautiful piece another life. It turns out it’s also a way of helping someone in your own community.

A Place for Women to Work

BBPD has also employed countless women over the years: moms raising young children, empty nesters starting new chapters, women caring for aging parents, and women walking through hard seasons of their own. Some have been with the shop for decades. Some have become lifelong friends.

Melissa knows those seasons firsthand. Over the years, she has married, raised children, and found herself homeschooling two kids while running two stores, something she admits was never on her bingo card. The business gave her the flexibility to be the mother her children needed, and she has made a point of offering that same flexibility and understanding to the women who work beside her.

The Prayer Walls

If you’ve visited either store, you’ve probably noticed the prayer walls and the Scripture throughout the shop. They’re there on purpose.

The prayer walls are open to everyone. There’s no need to explain your circumstances, tell your story, or even sign your name. Just leave your burden on a prayer card, and the team will pray for you. If you’d ever like someone to pray with you in person, they’d be honored to do that, too.

“We aren’t interested in spreading gossip,” Melissa says. “We’re interested in spreading hope, kindness, and God’s love.”

Still Here, Because of You

Retail today is harder than it has ever been, with more choices, more competition, and more ways to shop than anyone imagined in 1980. And yet, women keep choosing BBPD.

They bring in their beautiful things to consign. They shop the stores and the website. They send their daughters, mothers, sisters, and neighbors. Over 46 years, they’ve trusted BBPD with their belongings, their celebrations, their milestones, and their memories.

Whether you’ve been shopping with us for 40 years or found us last week, you’re part of this story.
